Abstract
-
In the post-war years, up until 1950, twentieth-century chamber music suffered a preponderance of poor-quality/inaccurate performances, or, had few or no performances at all. With the creation of the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble (the CCE) by Arthur Weisberg, a new era of high-quality/accurate renditions of contemporary chamber music was born. Weisberg formed the first non-traditional chamber ensemble that was dedicated to the performance of twentieth-century chamber music. In addition, the group was unique in its dedication to, and high caliber performances of, their repertoire.;This paper is divided into two main sections. Part I presents a chronological documentation of the CCE with close attention to the context out which the ensemble sprang, the high points in the group's existence, and the ensemble's short and long term importance and impact on twentieth-century chamber music.;Part II is comprised of a concert chronology which lists each concert performed by the group. The information included in each entry is as follows: date of the performance, venue/location, compositions/composers, premieres, personnel, reviews, radio broadcasts, and highlights of the reviews. The chronology is followed by nine appendices. The content of them is: a complete roster of players; a list of all the composers and works performed, premiered, commissioned, and/or read by the CCE; a discography with reviews; questionnaire and responses from performers, composers, former managers of the CCE, and music directors of other contemporary chamber ensembles; and last, but not least, the result of numerous interviews, by me, with Arthur Weisberg himself.
