Abstract
In the second half of the 20th century political theater with an accentuated marxist ideology lead the Venezuelan stage for approximately twenty years. From 1960 to nearly 1980, a socialist ideology as the main dramatic concern was the focus of most plays. In Venezuela socialist thoughts were central to theatrical expression in both professional and amateur theater. During this period, Venezuelan dramatists were primarily concerned with social and economic issues. Venezuela was experiencing constant waves of political demonstrations, protesting poor social and economic conditions. In addition to the political instability, government corruption and the influence of the Cuban Revolution were critical factors influencing all aspects of arts in Venezuela. However, by the mid 1980's, this political theatrical pattern, evident in so many performances, had become exhausted. This led to an artistic shift among playwrights, theater directors and spectators. Artists discovered that they had overused this concept without properly adapting it to the current needs of Venezuelan contemporary theater. This is why by the late 1980's, plays that concerned themselves with political matters were viewed as an artistic and social failure.;This study focuses (1) on the reasons that contributed to the decline of the political theater in Venezuela and (2) in the socio-cultural context that shaped Venezuelan theater during this period of social and political unrest. This work explores the specific development of political theater in Venezuela dating through the years of 1969 to 1979. It primarily focuses on the following representative plays: La trampa de los demonios (1977) by Cesar Rengifo, La guerrita de Rosendo (1976) by Gilberto Pinto, La farra (1974) and La empresa perdona un momento de locura (1978) both by Rodolfo Santana.
