Abstract
-
The objective of this dissertation is to examine how in his poetic work the Cuban poet Eliseo Diego, (La Habana, 1920---Mexico, 1994) tries to save everything from the corrosive and inexorable action of time, through the poetic word and image, dream and memory. This study analyzes Diego's theoretical conception of time and its importance to his poetic work, as expressed in his first seven books of poetry. Two methods of analysis are used. First, the thematic approach, in order to determine how Diego elaborates the theme of time through other themes, motives, symbols, images, contrasts and dualities and how these are transformed into the poetic signs and icons of his work. Second, the semiotic method applied to one poem representative of each book, in order to point out the richness of language, rhethorical devices, and poetic symbols in Diego's poetry. This textual analysis is based on the method presented by Michael Riffaterre in Semiotics of Poetry .
