Abstract
-
My dissertation provides material evidence of film production in Vie&dotbelow;t Nam from 1896 to 1926. Among 243 films, presented in a catalogue raisonne, only three were made by a single Vietnamese director at the end of the period. Under French colonial rule, Vietnamese spectators were subjected to the conventions of French cinema. With archival research, I demonstrate how French controls affected the emerging film culture. In 1926, the first Vietnamese film conformed to French newsreel production standards often associated with colonial propaganda.
