Abstract
The proliferation rate of mammalian cells is dependent on several parameters such amount of serum and cell density (confluence). Infrared Microspectroscopy (IR-MSP) is a powerful technique that has been used to detect changes due to these parameters in clusters of 3Y1 fibroblast cells. Both serum deprivation and high cell density produce a decrease in the amount of cells proceeding through the cell cycle as measured by FLOW cytometry. The work here has shown that small, consistent changes in the nucleic acid region (1140 cm-1--1040 cm-1) can be measured using IR-MSP. The changes are cell cycle dependent and are nearly identical for the serum deprived and highly confluent 3Y1 cells.
