Abstract
-
Although today Shinn is remembered primarily for his membership in the artists' group, The Eight, his contribution to American art in the early years of the 20th century was much more varied and far-reaching. At the time of The Eight's exhibition at Macbeth Galleries in 1908, Shinn had already been exhibiting his art for nine years. Shinn's coming together with The Eight was an extremely important chapter of the artist's career, but as this dissertation will demonstrate, it was only one of his several artistic associations and alignments.;Shinn's early career has never been comprehensively mapped. For many artists their early career is considered a prologue, a necessary, but often awkward, period on the way to their mature work. This was not the case for Shinn, for whom the early work is not only technically highly accomplished, but also explores all of the important themes that would continue to occupy him for the rest of his career. Indeed, Shinn's early work is in many ways his strongest accomplishment in the sense that it shows the artist at his most original and when he is most engaged with the crosscurrents of New York City.;Shinn's work is extremely diverse, ranging from delicate drawings in red chalk of dancers to gritty Ashcan pictures of evictions. The various styles in which he worked and the different subjects that commanded his attention pointed not only to the multiple facets of an intensely creative personality, but perhaps more importantly, to an artist who could recognize, absorb, and render the diverse influences, trends, and crosscurrents which were profoundly affecting life at the turn of the century. By thoroughly examining Shinn's work from 1897 to 1911, one can better understand not only the artist himself, but also the rich cosmopolitan environment that provided his inspiration.
