Abstract
This dissertation sets forth a description and analysis of the elements and conditions of cadences as found in Messiaen's Ile de feu I and the first movement of Boulez' Premiere Sonate . The causative stimuli that culminate in these cadences and signal the closing gestures of musical sections are also examined. From the analysis of these pieces, with occasional references to relevant examples from the tonal repertoire, general conclusions are drawn about the nature, meaning, and implications of cadential gestures in post-tonal music. The discussion focuses especially on the extra-harmonic aspects of cadences; the rhythmic, dynamic, melodic, and other factors that contribute to the formation of cadences are supplemented by references to harmonic content.;Chapter I introduces the proposed elements of cadential anticipation and recognition; Chapters II and III provide detailed cadential analysis of the two works studied; Chapter IV provides considerations for the performer of post-tonal music.
