Abstract
-
The piano works of Emmanuel Chabrier (1841--94), a composer best known for such orchestral works as Espana, inspired and exerted much influence on the next generation of French composers, most notably Maurice Ravel, Erik Satie, Claude Debussy, and Francis Poulenc. At a time when piano literature was dominated by the German tradition, Chabrier's piano music played a significant role in the development of the modern French piano school. One finds, in his works, the essence of the Impressionist school: an emphasis on varied colors and textures. They also project Chabrier's ebullient temperament through the bold use of the instrument. And with its humor and freshness, Chabrier's piano music contains all the hallmarks of twentieth-century French piano music.;This study discusses the innovations that Chabrier brought as a precursor to modern French piano music. An analysis of his piano compositions explores the characteristics of his music from various points of view: structural, harmonic, rhythmic, and melodic. Finally, the dissertation looks at Chabrier's influence on the next generation of composers, such as Maurice Ravel and Erik Satie, and compares some of their works with Chabrier's.;In all, the study examines the significant aspects of Chabrier's piano music and emphasizes the important role that his compositions had in the course of the development of French piano music.
