Abstract
-
This study closely examines the short one-act plays of Michel de Ghelderode from several perspectives. It looks for characteristics which set these works apart from his longer plays as well as those that indicate the short plays' kinship with the longer works. The study also examines, from the point of view of character, setting, structure, theme, genre, and language, the features which unify this group of plays and the ways in which Ghelderode adjusted his dramaturgy to the requirements of the one-act form.;As Ghelderode was a product of his day, this study explores the ways in which the contemporary schools of artistic thought affected this group of plays. Particular attention is paid to the influence of the Symbolist school, largely through the mediation of Maurice Maeterlinck, and to that of the Dada and Surrealist schools through Blaise Cendrars, Guillaume Apollinaire, Jean Cocteau, the Comte de Lautreamont, and Alfred Jarry.;Ghelderode further couched his themes in forms received from theatrical and literary tradition, such as the puppet show, the circus, the pastoral, Greek tragedy, medieval mystery, passion play, and the fairy tale. This study elaborates on the ways that Ghelderode applied and in many cases subeverted these preconceived forms.;This study concludes that these plays exemplify Ghelderode's dramatic control and cogency, as well as standing testament to the diversity of which he was capable. It also contains an appendix of fourteen previously untranslated short one-act plays.
