Abstract
The purpose of this study was to analyze the role which organized sport plays in the social development of a representative sample of new Caribbean nations. Through field research and in-depth interviews with leaders in the cultural and political sectors of Barbados, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica, and institutional analysis of the relationships between organized sports and nation building in each of the selected nations was carried out. The research focused particular attention on the role which sports institutions and sports participation plays in nations which follow the more moderate "neo-colonial" path to development versus those which have been influenced by the mass mobilization models exemplified by Cuba and other socialist new nations.
