Abstract
The various modes in which myth manifests itself in literature demand that it not be judged as a uniform element with identical functions within diverse frameworks. It is obvious that myth is not a coherent subject, but for this very reason it is susceptible of multifold approaches, even contradictory ones.;In recent years the term myth has come to mean so many things that its efficacy as a tool for critical investigation is seriously questioned. We adhere to the notion that myth is neither true nor false but that it is feasible to isolate certain characteristics inherent in all mythical universes. Later, these common traits could be applied to the analysis of a literary creation suspected of partaking of these very significant mythical contents.;The historico-literary production of the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega is an ideal example of the point in question. A survey of Garcilaso's work from La Florida to Historia del Peru reveals that despite such diversities as regional changes, distinctive characterizations and contrasting exploits from one account to the other, a subtle design can be discerned.;In chapter one, in order to penetrate the manifold mythical infiltrations in Garcilaso's production we find it imperative to explore the cultural background of sixteenth century Europe. This not only provides us with a frame of reference for Garcilaso's place within the Spanish Renaissance, but also helps us to understand certain attitudes of our author that would otherwise go undetected.;The second chapter of the dissertation aims to project a clear picture of what myth is according to the opinions of leading writers in the field. We proceed on the assumption that no single position, theory, approach or definition should be favored over any other. We explore in greater detail the ideas set forth by four leading investigators, each one of them outstanding in his own field of inquiry. They are: Bronislaw Malinowski, Claude Levi-Strauss, Mircea Eliade and Ernst Cassirer. The mythical components outlined by these critics will provide us with a methodological tool designed to point out the presence, function and manipulation of myth in Garcilaso's work.;Chapter three, four and five explore the diverse uses of myth in literature: myth as a theme, myth as conveyor of social ideology and myth as a way of tracing the path of the hero's adventures.;Throughout Garcilaso's work he purports to be giving us the reality of the empire of his ancestors. More often than he realized, the inner dynamics of myth revealed his own ideological world which is informed, perhaps unconsciously, by the events he claims to be recreating.;In no way does our analysis imply that recourse to myth is necessarily a direct attack on the historical foundations of Garcilaso's narrative account. Quite to the contrary, our intention is to explain how myth lends an even greater resonance and depth to Garcilaso's highly personal historical vision.
