Abstract
-
An attempt at a surrealist reading of the work of Macedonio Fernandez is made through an analysis of his philosophy and, in particular, his "Belarte Conciencial," the body of theories and techniques which he proposed as a blueprint for a new literary project. We show how Macedonio Fernandez, with this theory of "Belarte." rejects the purely referencial and mimetic in art to reaffirm the process of writing itself, through a continuous self-reflection on the literariness of each work and seeks not only aesthetic but also metaphysical aims. We relate Macedonio Fernandez' aesthetic ideas to those of Russian formalism and other trends in contemporary literary criticism, and further study their relationship to the framework of his own philosophical system, which we find naturally suited to the surrealist project of a conciliation of opposites. Accordingly, we proceed to discuss and analyze throughout his work a number of constants: liberty, metalanguage, love and eternity which act as deep structures generating a set of meanings parallel to the programs and aims of the surrealist vision.
