Abstract
-
A model for a continuing education program in administration for social workers was guided by a series of principles for design emanating from an exploratory field study of the attitudes and perceptions of social workers in middle management positions in social work agencies. The program was successful in drawing an initial student enrollment sufficient to secure program continuity, despite historical evidence of lack of interest in this area of continuing education in the greater New York City area. The success of the program was attributed to a program design stressing congruence with a social work professional value system and recognition of the stresses of transition from direct service practitioner to management roles.;The planning methodology focused on the identification of personal, professional and organizational obstacles to participation. The program design integrated theoretical perspectives on professional socialization, organizational exchange and adult learning in an exploratory approach toward the implementation of the new program. The profile of enrolled students provided an indication that the success of the program was in part due to the fact that it was providing a new linkage in support and legitimacy for social workers in movement along a career path from casework to administration and program management.;New patterns and routes for dialogue for educational planning are necessary at the middle levels of management to forge and maintain the link between the academic resources of the profession and the needs of practitioners in order to increase competence in administrative areas to support the delivery of social work services.
