Since its inception the genus Crocicreas Fries has been considered a member of the Sphaeropsidaceae. Reexamination of the type species of Crocicreas, Perisporium gramineum Fr., has revealed that this genus is a Discomycete, and a member of the Leotiaceae (Helotiales). Crocicreas is an older name for species previously described as Cyathicula. This monograph presents a key to the genera of Leotiaceae and Sclerotiniaceae with gelatinized apothecial tissues and a discussion of their relationship with Crocicreas. Full descriptions and illustrations are given for a total of 54 taxa accepted in Crocicreas. Thirty-eight taxa are transferred to Crocicreas: Belonioscypha alpina Stadelmann, Peziza amenti Batsch ex Pers., Phialea bicolor Starback, Helotium calathicolum Rehm, Peziza complicata Karsten, Peziza coronata Bulliard ex Merat, Peziza culmicola Desmazieres, Peziza cyathoidea Bulliard ex Merat, Peziza cacaliae Persoon, Helotium dispersellum Karsten, Peziza dolosella Karsten, Allophylaria dryadis Nannfeldt ex L. Holm, Peziza epitephra Berkeley, Peziza eschscholtziae Phillips & Harkness, Cyathicula furva Graddon, Belonium fuscum Phillips & Harkness, Helotium dolosellum (Karsten) Rehm f. gramineum Rehm, Davincia helios Penzig & Saccardo, Helotium hysterioides Rehm, Phialea incertella Rehm, Ombrophila megalospora Rea, Belonidium melanosporum Rehm, Cyathicula multicuspidata Rodway, Peziza nigrescens Cooke, Phialea nigrofusca Rehm, Phialea nivalis Rehm, Helotium Cyathoideum (Bull. ex Merat) Karsten **** H. nivellum Karsten, Phialea olympiana Kanouse, Cyathicula pallida Velenovsky, Phialea panici von Hohnel, Phialea phaeoconia Fairman, Peziza pteridicola H. & P. Crouan, Helotium spicarum Rehm, Phialea starbackii Rehm in Starback, Peziza stramineum Berkeley & Broome, Phialea subhyalina Rehm, and Cyathicula tomentosa Dennis. Sixteen new taxa are described in Crocicreas: C. bactrosporum, C. bambusicola, C. basiacuminatum, C. bisetosum, C. dolosellum (Karst.) S.E. Carpenter var. tropicum, C. espeletarum, C. gemmisporum, C. gigantosporum, C. helios (Penzig & Saccardo) S.E. Carpenter var. parahelios, C. nematosporum, C. nigrofuscum (Rehm) S.E. Carpenter var. allantosporum, C. quinqueseptatum, C. rufescens, C. septemseptatum, C. solare, and C. triseptatum. The taxonomic status of an additional 302 taxa, previously assigned to Allophylaria, Belonioscypha, Crocicreas, Cyathicula, Davincia and Phialea, is discussed, and these taxa excluded from Crocicreas Fr. emend. S.E.Carpenter.
