Abstract
Comparison of Elizabeth Gaskell's novels to British census sources shows that the "genteel" middle class men and women in a nineteenth century town experienced socio-economic change differently from each other and from the "non-genteel" middle class. A possible explanation for this difference lies in the importance for the "genteel" middle class of the cultural rule of hypergamy. While the articulation of family and class is concealed in the census, the novels are shown to be a useful tool for wider interpretation, as well as a repository of reliable data. Thus an emphasis on cultural rules and categories, lacking in many family histories, is used to add depth of analysis.
