Abstract
-
This dissertation examines the history of the New York City taxi industry from the time period 1897-1980. Its emphasis is on trying to explain the behavior of present day fleet drivers using a historical analysis of the class structure of the taxi industry in New York City.;The two factors that are most strongly emphasized are the development of right wing unionism in the industry during the nineteen fifties and the remuneration system, i.e., commission system.
