Abstract
-
This is a treatment of Danish phonology within a generative framework. There is a long tradition of linguistic study in Denmark, dating back to Rasmus Rask and Karl Verner, and including such well-known linguists as Otto Jespersen and Louis Hjelmslev. More recently, Hans Basboll and Jorgen Rischel have presented aspects of Danish phonology from a generative point of view. In the present work a more complete generative analysis is presented.;Chapter II treats the vowel system. A set of underlying vowels is posited, and the necessary rules of allophonic variation are formulated. The major issues of underlying vowel length, the status of schwa, and the relation of the stod, or glottal catch, to vowel length and to the syllable are considered. With respect to underlying vowel length, two sets of underlying vowels are posited, a long set and a corresponding short one. With respect to schwa, it is interpreted as derived in all instances. The stod is analyzed as a suprasegmental assigned early to all long vowels and to short vowels in certain environments, and the necessary rules of stod assignment and deletion are formulated.;Chapter III is concerned with the consonant system. A set of underlying consonants is posited, and the necessary rules of allophonic variation are formulated. The major problem for linguistic analysis within the area of the consonants of Danish is that of consonant gradation, or lenition. A discussion of the most important recent work on this subject is presented. The conclusion is reached here that previously proposed phonological solutions to the problem are more costly than the morphological solution which is adopted here.;Chapter IV deals with the system of verbal inflections. Underlying forms are posited for the verbal suffixes, and the necessary rules are formulated to relate them to their surface forms. Chapter V treats the system of noun inflections in a similar manner.;From the facts of Danish, especially with respect to the.;assignment of the stod and the behavior of certain consonants.;(particularly {lcub}n{rcub} and the stops involved in consonant gradation(, ).;phenomena), support is adduced for the inclusion of the notion of.;the syllable in the grammar.
