Abstract
It is the purpose of this study to explore the novels of Samuel Jackson Pratt, evaluating their worth and interest. Pratt was a social critic and moralist; the novels: Liberal Opinions, The Pupil of Pleasure, Travels for the Heart, The Tutor of Truth, Shenstome Green, Emma Corbett and Family Secrets deal with human beings caught up in a social milieu.;The major objective of this study is to examine systems and sentiment, the key elements of Pratt's theoretic and pragmatic criticisms of his society. The ambiguity of Pratt's treatment of his sentimental characters, his realistic characters, and the dreams they pursue in the guise of systems is the focus of the analysis of Pratt's social and moral criticism of his contemporary world as he represented it in his fictional worlds.
