The myth of Pyramus and Thisbe has given rise to numerous imitations. Chapter One deals with some of the better known adaptations in Latin, French, Italian, English, Dutch, and German; Chapter Two focuses on Spanish imitations beginning with that included in the General Estoria and concluding with Gongora's burlesque romance "La ciudad de Babilonia" (1618), which makes its appearance midst the polemic inspired by the Polifemo and Soledades.;Chapter Three begins with a study of parody in its historical context; and, after tracing the special place it occupies in Gongora's poetry, concludes with a discussion of his Fabula de P(')iramo y Tisbe as a defense of the author's own poetic art and as an attack against the conventions of contemporary poetry.;There follows (Chapter Four) a stylistic analysis of the Fabula, the first part of which deals with the cultista elements (complexities both in language and syntax, neologisms, hyperbaton, metaphors, mythological allusions, and so on); in the second the burlesque elements are dealt with (puns, obscene and scatological jests, anacronisms, burlesque imagery, for example).;The text for the Fabula (Chapter Five) is based on the edition by Salazar Mardones (Ilustracion y defensa de la "Fabula de P(')iramo y Tisbe," 1636). The editions of Vicuna (1627), Pellicer (1630), Hoces (1633), Foulche-Delbosc (1921), who reproduces the Chacon manuscript, and Robert Jammes ("Notes sur 'La fabula de P(')iramo y Tisbe' de Gongora," Les Langues Neo-Latines, XV (1961), pp. 4-11), who bases his text on Ms. 4269 (17th Century) of the Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid, have been consulted.;Extensive annotation is provided in Chapter Six to explain the difficult passages more fully and a literal prose version supplied in Chapter Seven.
