Abstract
Certain linguists have concerned themselves with the study of the different levels of enunciation in narrative prose and though not directly related to Bernal D(')iaz del Castillo's Historia verdadera, their theories present interesting suggestions for a possible re-examination of Bernal's text.;We have drawn our basic criterion from the ideas of (')Emile Benveniste, Harald Weinrich and Roland Barthes. Our purpose is to apply their theories of tense analysis to the Historia verdadera so as to determine their validity when actually applied in practice. With respect to the text itself, we hope to re-evaluate the historian's role as narrator, identify the narrative techniques used and determine the linguistic level to which the text belongs.;After careful consideration, we arrived at the conclusion that the Historia verdadera is best referred to as a "military memoir." We determined that the vital interaction between Bernal's distinct roles and the historical events narrated stems from his condition of protagonist.;There is a constant interplay between the historian's double function of objective informer and subjective commentator. This gives rise to the tension that exists between the two levels of enunciation that characterize the work: history and discourse. The discourse level of enunciation permits Bernal D(')iaz to interrupt the strict narration of historical events in order to interpret them, communicate with his reader and establish himself as a psychological entity. The organizational shifters facilitate the interweaving of subjective material within the larger framework of the historical narrative. The content units and occurrents help us to dismantle this seemingly chaotic text and to discover that it has an internally organized structure with several levels of significance. Given the variety of stylistic traits, it seems appropriate to refer to the Historia verdadera as "discours-histoire.".
