Abstract
-
This study documents the history of the Theatre Union, a Marxist oriented theatre company organized in 1933 for the central purpose of producing plays for workers. The study considers the Threatre Union in relation to contemporary Broadway Theatre and to the socio-economic conditions generated by the Great Depression.;The dissertation first examines the factors motivating the creation of the Theatre Union, who its founders were, and the operational principles--theatrical, administrative, and political--which guided its work. The study then considers in chronological order the eight plays the Theatre Union produced and the various other activities, both artistic and political, it was involved in.;The conclusion of the dissertation states that despite certain inherent weaknesses the Theatre Union exerted considerable influence in the left-wing theatre of the thirties, particularly with its methods of audience development. The conclusion shows, too, that the Theatre Union brought professional standards to the production of social drama and that the company reflected the social and political temperament of its time.
