Abstract
This dissertation is an in-depth critical analysis of the philosophical nature of the poetical works of Cintio Vitier. One of Cuba's most important living poets, a member and leading spokesman for the "Origenes" cultural movement Vitier has published since 1938 to 1981, thirteen books of poetry. In each book Vitier explores the dialectics of different philosophical approaches to the quest for knowledge, from the pre-Socratics to the German phenomenologists.;The first chapter of this dissertation is a biography that exemplifies the rich cultural background of a poet whose life has been devoted to the search for knowledge. The second chapter is a historical account of Vitier's relationship to Origenes and its basic impact upon the very foundations of poetry in Cuba. From a chronological perspective, and a hermeneutical-philosophical approach, the third and fourth chapters are a critical analysis of the poetical works of Vitier. They also constitute an answer to the misunderstandings that still prevail towards a poetry that has been labeled "hermetic", instead of unique in its creative symbolic imagery that illuminates a poet's basic questions of life.
