Abstract
-
This study examines the relationship between the communication strategies of learners of English as a second language and grammatical achievement. First, the nature of communication between native speakers and non-native speakers is explored. Second, an objective measure for the communicative effectiveness of second language learners is proposed. Third, the hypothesis is tested that learners who readily participate in conversation will be more successful at mastering the grammatical structures of the target language than those less eager to participate. Finally, the communication strategies of two learners, one "good" and one "poor," are compared to determine how their strategies may affect acquisition.
