Abstract
This dissertation examines the precise rhetorical strategies of Octavio Paz's art criticism. His art criticism is determined by his specific definition of the work of art as a relative autonomous entity that is in permanent interaction with its spectators. This irreducible nature of the work of art restricts the function of interpretation by the impossibility of fully describing the identity and constitutive properties of a work of art on which interpretations and evaluations have to be based. This characterization of interpretation justifies his development of a creative mode of criticism. The initial chapters review the theoretical framework and critical tradition of his writing, specifically of his conception of imagination, correspondence and autonomy of art. Later chapters review his extensive use of the analogical mode and other rhetorical strategies and techniques in the description, argumentation and evaluation of the work of art. The final chapters analyze his strategy of blurring the limits between criticism and poetry while advancing and validating his theory of art.
