Abstract
-
Biography is indeed the least proliferous genre in Spanish Literature. It is for this reason that the biographical works of Eugenio d'Ors achieve a unique position in our literature. First of all, the Angelology or theory on personality, which d'Ors made explicit in his Introduccion a la vida angelica, establishes the foundation for the exploration of this genre. D'Ors' Angelology represents the application of the principles of Dialectic to the field of an individual human reality. After a thorough understanding of his Angelology, the chapters contained in this dissertation analyze d'Ors' theory as applied to the representative biographical works of this author.;Unlike Freud's, d'Ors' theory acknowledges three states of consciousness that he believes should be taken into consideration when defining the life of an individual: the subconscious, conscious and superconscious. Thus, Eugenio d'Ors distinguishes three types of personality: demonic man, social man and angelic man. These categories have no relationship to the moral concept of demonic or angelical nor with Freud's id, ego, and superego. Rather, they correspond respectively to that of the man moved by the subconscious such as Goya, the man who acts essentially consciously such as the Catholic Monarchs (Ferdinand and Isabel), and the "angelical man" or individual always led by the superconscious such as Eugenio Torralba. The application of D'Ors' theory on personality is exemplified primarily in his biographical trilogy Epos de los destinos in which d'Ors explores the biography of the three personalities mentioned above.;Rather than narrating, d'Ors' biography defines a personality in order to follow the direction of a life in its struggle with destiny. Defining personalities is also what he does in works of biographical intention such as El Valle de Josafat and Flos Sophorum discussed in Chapter IV. A comparison and contrast with traditional biography is offered in Chapter V. And, finally, Chapter VI is a comparative study of Ortega y Gasset's biography with that of d'Ors. This dissertation constitutes a multi-angled study of a genre outstanding for its scarcity in Spanish Literature as well as for offering a new perspective in its modern approach to the creation of biography.
