Abstract
-
This dissertation presents an overview of American military administration during the War for Independence. The colonies entered the war with little basic understanding of the duties of a war office. They did perceive, however, that some centralized structure was needed to coordinate the administrative activities that keep armies functioning in the field. These activities included keeping accurate records, and making arrangements to insure the troops were adequately fed, clothed, and equipped. This paper chronicles the successes and failures of the Board of War in attempting to fulfill its obligations in that regard. In the end, we see that the Board made a small though useful contribution to the war effort.
