Abstract
-
The dissertation examines the authenticity of Haydn's early instrumental works that have not been proven definitely authentic or definitely spurious, using a stylistic method of authenticity determination. The method consists of two sets of criteria (Test I and II): quantitative ranges and checklists. Examples of quantitative ranges include: (1) harmonic rhythm, (2) textural rhythm, and (3) the number of impacts per beat. The checklists contain characteristics that always or usually appear in Haydn's works and traits that rarely or never occur. The method proved to be very reliable with only one conflicting result in ninety-eight compositions studied (two movements of a work passed the profile, while a third failed), and with over 400 non-Haydn works failing the tests.;Conclusions of the study were as follows: (1) Keyboard sonatas. authentic: XVI:1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, Eb2, Eb3, G1, XVII:D1. spurious: XVI:5, 16, 17. arrangement: XVI:11. (2) Accompanied keyboard divertimentos. authentic:XIV:12, 13, C1, C2, XVIII:F2. spurious: Concertino in D. (3) Early keyboard trios. authentic: XV:1, 34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 40, 41, C1, F1. (4) String trios. authentic: V:C1, C4, D1, D3, F1, G1, G3, G4, A2, A3, B1. spurious: V:C2, C3, C5, C6, C7, C8, D4, D, Eb2, Eb3, Eb4, Eb5, Eb11, E2, F7, F9, G5, A8, B4, B7. (5) Op. 3 string quartets. spurious Op. 3, nos. 1-6; Nos. 1 and 2 by Hofstetter. (6) Divertimentos. authentic: II:D18, D22, D23, G1, G9/C12. spurious: II:18, 19, 39, D6, D9, D10, D11, G4, Deeest in C, D8, A1, B4, F2, F12.
