Abstract
The purpose of this study is to evaluate Heinrich Boll's women character and their influence on the social consciousness of their family and friends and on the political life of the present day German Federal Republic.;It is a striking feature of most of Heinrich Boll's major works that his female protagonists are the decisive factor in determining the life and well-being of their male counterparts. Their influence extends beyond their physical presence and becomes internalized. Boll's anarchistic-nihilistic viewpoint of government, predating the Nazi era, makes all demands of society suspect.;His main characters, with the exception of Billard um halb zehn, lead their lives on the fringes of society. Their actions seem to be inconsequential and outside of the accepted societal norms. Originality apolitical, they become politicized by injustice inflicted upon them. Their only claim to greatness lies in their ability to show love and compassion to their fellow-man. These qualities have no place in a modern materialistic society. It is Boll's contention that these basic qualities alone can lead to the betterment of the social and political system.;The result of this study suggests that throughout stylistic and formal changes Boll's female protagonists maintain their inner qualities and determination to effect societal changes. They are conceived complementary of one another from Olina in Der Zug war punktlich to Katharina in Die verlorene Ehre der Katharina Blum. In their search for a more humane society the author has imbued his women characters with an inner strength that, as he believes, can effect the desired changes.
