Abstract
Jacques Stephen Alexis was one of the most prolific Ha(')itian writers of the modern era. Besides his writings on aesthetics, the theory of novel, poetry, religion, politics, etc., he published before his tragic death three excellent novels, Compere general soleil, Les Arbres musiciens et L'Espace d'un cillement.;However, taking into consideration the substantial works of Maximilien Laroche, Claude Souffrant, Ghislain Gouraige, Pradel Ponpilus/Frere Raphael Berrou, Robert Emmanuel, Michael Dash, Michel Seonnet, etc., and the recent articles which since 1982, keep enriching the alexian studies, there doesn't exist, to our knowledge, any synthetic evaluation of his novels, aesthetics and socio-political thought. L'Humanisme de Jacques Stephen Alexis intends to fill this vacuum.;The present study comprises, besides the introduction, three parts and a conclusion.;The first part deals with the historical-sociological localisation of Alexis.;The second part evaluates the impact of Jacques Roumain on the personality and philosophy of our writer, his participation in the Ha(')itian revolutionary movement of 1946 and his contacts with the great literary and political world during his exile in Europe (1947-1954).;The third part is an exploration of his novels. In this context, a detailed analysis of Compere general soleil, Les Arbres musiciens, L'Espace d'un cillement retraces the circumstances of the publication of these literary works, delineates their cadre, presents the main characters and emphasizes the principal themes. In addition, it recalls the different reactions of some critics as to these marvelous novels.;The conclusion accentuates the contestation and the commitment in Alexis's works which not only describe life but also propose solutions to human problems.;Dealing with Jacques Stephen Alexis, who, by himself, constitutes a stage toward the Renaissance and the development of the culture of the Third World Nations (especially the Afro-Caribbean and Latin-American), it is very important to underline that this marxist-leninist thinker--conscious of the "specifites" of his historical origin--questions systematically the established literary, philosophical, religious, social, political norms and conventions.;In his novels, aesthetical (Prolegonemes...) and political essays (Manifeste du P.E.P...) we can retrace the evolution of his rebellion.
