This work studies the "romance de ciegos," which only until recently was neglected by literary historians. Chapter One deals with the "romance tradicional" or "romance viejo," the appearance of the "romance art(')istico" as a product of the "poetas cultos," and the birth and evolution of the "romance de german(')ia" or "jacara." Chapter Two traces the development of the "romance art(')istico" during the Eighteenth Century.;In Chapter Three, which together with the remaining chapters and the two appendices constitutes the main body of the work, we study the general characteristics of the "romance de ciegos," the "ciego" as propagator of the "romances de ciegos," the "literatura de cordel," the reaction of the 18th century public to the "romance de ciegos," and, lastly, literary criticism surrounding the "romance de ciegos.".;Chapters Four, Five, and Six discuss three of the most recurrent themes in the "romances de ciego:" violence, religion, and the constant preoccupation with their times.;The first appendix includes the text of the "romances" utilized in this work; the second appendix is a list of these and other "romances de ciego" which can be found in the library of the Hispanic Society of New York.
