Abstract
-
This thesis examines the factors influencing the use of government services by low-income Latin American immigrant women in New York City. Patterns of migration and employment and informal social networks are shown to affect women's use of day care, food stamps, Medicaid, and welfare. Service use is looked at in terms of the immigrants' experiences in service agencies as well as the views of the institutional workers who dispense state aid. This thesis combines qualitative data from participant-observation and case studies with quantitative data.
