Abstract
-
This dissertation examines the history of the Winter Project (1976--1983) and its particular process of creating theatre. Many of these "ways of working" were initiated in the Open Theater and were passed down and developed by Joseph Chaikin and his collaborators. I have included interviews with as many of the original collaborators as possible in order to represent the views of practitioners, which are often overlooked by scholars. I have particularly stressed the influential role of the dramaturg Mira Rafalowicz. The original scripts and documents relating to the five productions of the Winter Project have been included in an appendix. Most of these have never been published. I have also provided some theoretical perspective to the work. The Winter Project's interest in examining fragmentary moments of behavior, in developing non-linear images of visual and auditory resonance and combining those images and moments into collage-like constructions anticipates and reflects the beginnings of postmodern sensibilities and aesthetics.
