Abstract
-
This study investigates the interpretation of pronominal and anaphoric elements in Catalan subjunctive clauses within the framework of the Government-Binding theory of grammar (cf. Chomsky (1981)).;It is suggested that the domain in which the binding principles apply is determined by the notion of Tense-chain. Based on the idiosyncracies of subjunctive sentences with respect to tense marking, it is claimed that subjunctive clauses are transparent domains for binding. Obviative interpretation for their pronominal subject follows from the binding principles. The ungrammaticality of nominative anaphors in this type of clause is suggested to be related to the intrinsic properties of the +AGR marker.;Subject-object asymmetries for obviative interpretation are accounted for by a principle related to the theory of Case.;Upon the observation that pronominal subjects of subjunctive sentences containing modal verbs can freely corefer with a possible antecedent, an analysis of modals in the null-subject languages is developed within the broader context of restructuring constructions. It is suggested that (epistemic) modal verbs are in the INFL node in Romance. From this fact, their opacity triggering properties are derived.
