Abstract
This dissertation is a study of the role of the United States Marine Corps in the U.S. defense establishment during the period 1880-1947. In 1880 the framework of the United States military contained within it a supposedly minor organization which in the past century developed from a small police-type naval force. In 1947 this small naval police force organization had grown into a force containing infantry, armour, artillery and aviation units which far exceeds the total military force of most countries throughout the world. The question of how and why this force developed as it did is the subject of this study.;The paper attempts to trace the development of the Marine Corps from a seagoing police force in 1880 to the formal recognition of it's multi-purpose mission by Congress in 1947. The concentration of this study is on the changing mission of the Maine Corps rather than it's role in amphibious warfare. In this respect the Marine Corps is unique in that its's adaptation to changing roles and missions had been a crucial factor in it's own success. This paper traces the history of that adaptability.
