Abstract
The group of writers that belongs to the Generation of 1936 experienced its literary beginnings just before the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939; an event that marked them deeply regardless of which side they supported.;Nevertheless, even before the war this group of writers had a distinct voice characterized by a concern for the moral and spiritual problems of man. In the poets of the Generation of 1936 this manner of perceiving life generates a new concept of poetry. It continues the tradition of Unamuno and Antonio Machado and represents a break with the artistic orientation of Juan Ramon Jimenez and the Generation of 27 that precedes it.;The devastation of the social and cultural fabric of Spanish life by the Spanish Civil War created the proper climate for the full development of the new literary tendency mentioned above in which the theme of the family is to acquire a special place. The reason is that the family as a social unit stands amidst this destruction, and expressing their feelings about their family permits this group of poets to manifest their fears and concerns.;For some poets--Gil, Hernandez, Panero, Rosales and Vivanco--the theme of the family is recurrent throughout their poetry. For Ridruejo, however, it appears for only a period of time: during the decade of the 40's. For still others it manifests itself only occasionally. Yet, regardless of the time in which the theme of the family is important, it expresses the poet's anguish caused by the hostility of the outside world and by his inner turmoil originated by man's human condition.;At the same time, because in every day life the family offers a blanket of emotional protection, as a poetic theme it gives refuge from the outside world. It also provides the possibility of communion with another human being and the hope of transcendence, providing the solution to man's feelings of despair and helplessness. And in so doing, this theme allows these poets to explore the existencial problems pertaining to all men.
