Abstract
-
The focus of this project is on planned organizational change in a complex organization subsequent to bureaucratic succession. Specifically, it is concerned with structural changes in a social work department of a large, urban, municipal hospital. The current fiscal and professional environment is described and used as the setting for the planned changes. The author outlines a general model for guiding the selection of change strategies and presents the theoretical basis for his choice of an interventive approach utilizing a Human Relations and Participative management style. Specific goals are identified, pre- and post-intervention measurements are obtained and evaluated employing an interrupted time-series research design. The use of this particular leadership philosophy is discussed as being an effective one in managing social work departments.
