Abstract
-
The short story has been the "Cinderella" of contemporary Spanish literature. In spite of numerous stories published in books, magazines and newspapers, critics have paid scant attention to the Spanish short story.;In this study we propose to focus attention on the heretofore neglected short story of the 1939 Spanish exile. We will study, in particular, the short fiction of three writers who began their literary careers in exile: Manuel Andujar, Segundo Serrano Poncela and Eugenio Fernandez Granell.;The short story is a complex literary form, having distinct limitations and possibilities. It often complements the writer's other narrative work and may become his preferred vehicle of expression.;In our study we will attempt to answer the following questions: Does a generational or thematic unity exist in these expatriate writers, or is each writer unique unto himself? What contributions have the exiled writers made to the "short story" genre?;Following the thematic and formal analyses of the short fiction of Manuel Andujar, Segundo Serrano Poncela and Eugenio Fernandez Granell, we have compiled a partial list of exiled authors, wherein we have provided biographical and bibliographical information. Also included are the personal interviews that Messrs. Andujar and Granell so graciously granted us.
