This is an exploratory study concerned with the health problem of non-compliance (or non-adherence) to prescribed treatment regimens in chronic illness. An educational program offered a multi-family, experience-sharing, group counselling strategy, based on the theoretical concepts of Lewin, Glasser, Knowles and Laqueur. The hypothesis tested the assumption that exposure to the multi-family counselling would improve the compliance or adherence to prescribed treatment regimens.;The New York Diabetes Affiliate advertised locally that a program was to be offered for persons with diabetes. In the order of their response, clients were formed into three groups with ten members in each group. The participants selected were requested to bring a family member or significant other to each of ten planned sessions.;The research design selected was a three group pre-test post-test design. The three variables considered in this study were the independent variables (the multi-family counselling), the dependent variables (the health behavior of the participants), and the intermediate variables, consisting of the predisposing, enabling and reenforcing factors believed to contribute to the health behavior.;The participants were scored on 15 assessment criteria at each session. The scores were based on self reporting and the first session scores were considered the pre-test and the scores of the last session the post-test.;The data obtained was analyzed using the t-test for matched samples and, at the 0.05 level, revealed a significant difference between the pre- and post-scores of all three groups. The null hypothesis was rejected in the test results for all three groups. The analysis variance statistical test was applied to the pre-test scores for the F ratio, at the 0.05 level, and the data revealed no significant difference between the means of the pre scores for all three groups. The null hypothesis was accepted for the results of this test.;The role of the social worker as a health education counsellor in chronic illness was based on education background, with the objective to develop the potential of the individual and to improve the quality of the life of the client.;This was an exploratory study so that causal relationships cannot be determined, but the data suggests that further research might be recommended to discover the potential of the role of multi-family counselling in resolving the problem of non-compliance to treatment regimens in chronic illness.
