Abstract
Virgilio Pinera's major dramatic plays are related to the specific historical processes taking place in Cuba from the time of Fulgencio Batista's first government until the socialist revolution headed by Fidel Castro. These works represent a critical portrayal of four different and distinguishable historical periods: 1940-1944, Electra Garrigo (1941); 1944-1952, Jesus (1948); 1952-1958, Aire fr(')io (1959); and 1959-1970, Dos viejos panicos (1968). These four periods corre- spond, first, to the initial government of Fulgencio Batista; second, Grau San Mart(')in's and Carlos Pr(')io's governments; third, the Batista dictatorship; and fourth, Fidel Castro's regime. While Electra Garrigo and Jesus critique the immediate society surrounding the time of their composition, Aire fr(')io embrances not only its own historical moment but also reaches back to the society of Grau, Pr(')io, and Batista. With Dos viejos panicos, Pinera returns to the immediacy of the present for his weighing of society and its values.;Pinera's minor works, eight plays, reflect the periods of criticism elaborated more fully in the above-cited dramatic works. His critical vision, however, in these works narrows to vital particulars within society rather than widening to encompass the complex interplay of its length and breadth, so characteristic of the other pieces.;Chapter I is the biography of the writer. Chapter II is a survey of the theater in Cuba during the twentieth century. In Chapter III, Electra Garrigo is studied in light of the function of myth within society. Chapter IV discusses Jesus as a political myth. The Cuban family is the focus of analysis used in Chapter V to illustrate Aire fr(')io. Chapter VI centers on the role of fear and death in Dos viejos panicos. Chapter VII treats Pinera's minor works. Then follow the conclusions, and, finally, the bibliography, which is divided into the different genres cultivated by Pinera (poetry, short stories, essays, novels, and translations), criticism on the author, and an extensive general bibliography.
