Abstract
This thesis investigates a type of wh-construction, "partial wh-movement", in which the wh-phrase appears in a position lower than the position from which it takes scope. The latter position is occupied by an element referred to as a scope-marker. A second construction, "multiple wh-movement", exhibiting movement of more than one wh-phrase in multiple questions, is considered to be part of the same phenomenon. Romani and German, which have these constructions in addition to the English type, "full wh-movement", serve as the basis for the investigation. The study is conducted within the Revised Extended Standard Theory of generative grammar.;The restrictions on partial and multiple wh-movement are accounted for by the Empty Category Principle and subjacency. The latter is recast as a set of constraints on representation, the Wh-chain Condition. Wh-constructions (including full wh-movement) are treated in terms of the chains which are formed. In order for multiple wh-movement structures to meet the Wh-chain Condition, it is necessary to posit a rule of absorption applying at S-structure. Finally, it is shown how the Wh-chain Condition, absorption, and various other proposed principles might be handled in terms of parameters and learnability.
