Abstract
-
Diamante's female characters are either traditional heroines of literature--always strong, unconventional, rebellious, realistic and poetic--or they are courageous aristocratic ladies, and valiant queens of legend or myth, saints or martyrs, portrayed as true heroes. The systematic portrayal of heroic women draws attention towards Diamante's theatre because it is consistent with his treatment of the male protagonists. These heroic female characters deserve to be studied because like the masculine saints and military heroes of Spain's history and legend, for which Diamante is better known, the legendary female heroes make Diamante's merit as an author of comedias evident. I hope that the present study will encourage a wider and deeper appreciation for Diamante's important, but neglected artistic world.;In Diamante's comedias, there seems to be a conscious attempt to reconstruct the woman behind the character, women's image, and the dramatic principle, through the laws of nature. Because the topic of women is debated extensively in the comedias, the female characters add a social interest to the human and artistic dimensions of the plays. Through the unconventional heroines who defy custom and denounce the norm, Diamante clearly intends to reevaluate, redefine, and reinterpret the comedia, the female image--woman's archetype--or her desire to change the place and role in the artistic and human universe.;These heroines discuss, debate, question and oppose certain views about women's nature, and biological function as factors which determine their roles, ability to choose, be educated, and hold office. However, these issues that make the comedias both interesting and contemporary, also make clear that these women do not disregard social conventions in favor of a personal and individual morality. Therefore, the social aspect of his plays also has ethical and dramatic implications. Surely, rebellious acts and nonconventional conduct based on the Natural Law, the "Libre Albedr(')io", express a sincere cry for justice and freedom. But, the tension created by the heroine's attempts to change attitudes and to create a new consciousness, makes her a strong testimony of human truth, tradition, real values, and the nucleus of Diamante's dramatic irony.
