Abstract
-
Ottonia is a distinct natural group in the large family Piperaceae. It was previously recognized as a genus, but is here placed as a subgenus of Piper. It consists of 21 species, 16 of which are restricted to the SE Atlantic Coastal forest of Brazil, the rest occurring in the Amazon basin and NE South America (P. darienense). The subgenus includes species with sessile and/or racemose inflorescences. None of these two groups, however, conform monophyletic units. Thus, this treatment does not recognize Ottonia as consisting only of species with pinnately nerved leaves and racemose inflorescences, as has been previously interpreted. Data from seed coat structure, seed morphology, primary stem anatomy, wood anatomy, leaf anatomy and leaf histology, and flower development were used to elaborate a cladistic analysis of the subgenus. That analysis was performed using as a sister group the subgen. Callianira. The sister group was selected based on a cladistic analysis generated for the entire genus Piper. Seed coat structure as well as seed morphology, and to certain extent leaf histology, proved to be of diagnostic value at species level. Of the 25 species previously recognized, 15 are placed on synonomy, and 36 names previously synonomized are relocated. Two species, Piper brevinodis (pedicellate flowers) and Piper ubatubensis (sessile flowers) are described as new. One species, Ottonia corei, from the Andes of Colombia is excluded and transfered to Piper.
