Abstract
-
This ethnographic study of nineteen Black and White female single-parent families examines the ways in which contemporary race and class relations condition the quality of life of female single-parent families.;Special attention is given to the ways in which the mothers generate income to support their families, and organize child care, child rearing and domestic activities.;The discussion provides a detailed description of the differences in the composition and content of material resources, services and information exchanged through the kinship/friendship network systems in which these families are embedded. These resources are reviewed from the perspective of how they, in conjunction with various types of state subsidies, condition the standard of living, life style and future life changes of these families.
