Abstract
-
This work is an in-depth study of the theatrical career of Harold Prince, one of the foremost producers and directors of the contemporary Broadway musical. It covers more than thirty productions which Prince produced and/or directed during the years 1954 to 1982. Among the Broadway musicals examined in this study are The Pajama Game, Damn Yankees, West Side Story, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Fiddler on the Roof, She Loves Me, Cabaret, Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, Pacific Overtures, On the Twentieth Century, Evita, and Sweeney Todd.;The history of each of the Prince shows is traced from its inception and pre-production period through rehearsals, out-of-town tryouts, until its Broadway premiere and critical reception. There are many anecdotes as well as inside information on these productions which emerged from intensive research and interviews with more than 25 Prince collaborators and associates.;Among the theatre persons interviewed by the author are Harold Prince, George Abbott, Stephen Sondheim, Lisa (Mrs. Boris) Aronson, Gwen Verdon, Fred Ebb, Sheldon Harnick, Hugh Wheeler, and John Weidman.;The study reveals original information on how Prince works with his collaborators, the philosophy and style of his work, his influences, and how he, in turn, has influenced and changed the American Musical Theatre.
