Abstract
This dissertation evaluates the nineteen surviving musical-stage works by Michel-Richard Delalande (1657-1726) within the artistic and cultural context of the French court for which they were composed. Occupying the most important music posts in the court during the second half of the reign of Louis XIV and the first decade of Louis XV's rule, Delalande's career exemplifies an artist's dedication to the political establishment which employed him. While the composer's seventy-one grands motets have been studied frequently in the twentieth century, his secular oeuvre for the court has been neglected.;Delalande's stage repertoire includes ballets, mascarades, intermedes for comedies, and concerts. His compositional approach exhibits conventions established by Jean-Baptiste Lully a generation earlier: most works are multi-sectioned, with vocal and instrumental music; many employed sets, costumes, and dance, and included between ten and one hundred seventy-five performers from the court music establishment, the Paris Opera, and the nobility. All were composed on relatively short notice to recognize special events in court and to entertain courtiers.;The dissertation begins with a summary of Delalande's personal life and professional career. The second chapter summarizes this secular repertoire and demonstrates its relationship to court political, social, and cultural vicissitudes. The following three chapters evaluate each composition, considering the political and artistic environment of each; primary sources of music and text, which survive in varying degrees of completeness; the organization of each work, with musical examples; and the conditions of performance, including names and numbers of performers, rehearsal schedules, and the site of performance, when known. The three appendixes include a calendar of musical-theatrical performances at court from 1680 to 1723, for a general perspective on its musical life; a Catalogue Raisonne for information about Delalande's oeuvre in reference format, including an index to all performers listed in the Catalogue; and a Thematic Catalogue of music from the stage works, arranged by melodic interval to facilitate comparison with other repertoire.;Studying Delalande's secular compositions as a body enhances our evaluation of an important composer who served artistically influential French kings and also provides a foundation on which to build a more comprehensive view of musical life in the Bourbon court.
