Abstract
-
The purpose of this study is to show how the musical settings of Claude Debussy and Benjamin Britten interact respectively with the poetry of Paul Verlaine and William Blake in the composite form known as Art Song. Through detailed descriptions and analyses of the music and texts of the seventeen poems by Verlaine chosen for setting by Debussy and the song cycle constructed by Britten of selections from Songs of Experience, Proverbs of Hell and Auguries of Innocence by Blake, I hope to have demonstrated the composers' use of gestural analogues to complement, define and enhance the poetry, thereby creating music which serves as surrounding matrix, extension and interpretation of the original literary material.
