Abstract
-
This thesis investigates the properties of anaphors and pronominals and grammatical changing processes in Bari. In order to do this, the structure of the complex verb is considered in detail. This helps to shed some light on why there appears to be a 'clause-mate' restriction on the domain of reference for the anaphor in this language and why under certain conditions, the verb becomes double accusative.;It is claimed that these changes are largely brought about through the interaction of verb movement and by adjunction of certain types of argument-bearing affixes, traditionally known as 'applicatives' on to the matrix verb. This movement results in changes in the Grammatical Functions and argument structure of the verb and helps to explain in a straightforward manner the otherwise obscure distinction between reciprocal to and causative to. Affix adjunction is assumed to be a movement rule, similar to the rule 'mnove-alpha', where movement is taken to include both maximal and zero level categories. The study is conducted within the Revised Extended Standard Theory of generative grammar.;Also in this study, the Pro-Drop Parameter is reformulated to accommodate languages such as Bari that do not have agreement of any kind. It is shown that 'applicative' movement and verb movement and the new version of the Pro-Drop Parameter accounts for the ability of the verb to be almost a sentence in length.
