Abstract
The purpose of this study is to trace the history of the relationship between major theatrical organizations and land use in midtown Manhattan in the years 1925 through 1928. The term theater or variants thereon is used to include theater proper, motion pictures, music, and broadcasting. The study attempts to delineate the role played in theatrical land development by factors such as transportation facilities, nontheatrical real estate firms and financial organizations. The years 1925 through 1928 were chosen for study because they were a period of particularly dynamic growth in the theatrical industry, including growth in its need for various kinds of realty developments. These included theaters, broadcasting studios, production or rehearsal spaces, and office space.;The geographical area covered by the study is midtown Manhattan from 34th to 63rd Streets. It was selected because it was the area within which most major theatrical facilities in New York City, including new theatrical developments, were located, and was the projected site for many major theatrical projects which were not built.;The study proceeds primarily in chronological sequence, and then, within each major time segment, geographically from south to north, exceptions being made when a specific event affects an area larger than a single parcel or block, or when necessary to clarify a point.
