Abstract
-
This essay attempts to show that the structure of Lo prohibido and the narrative forms taken by the discourse result from a tension between the need to create a mimetic universe which is presented as referential and the aim of constructing paradigms that reflect a personal and highly idiosyncratic ideological view of contemporary society. The discourse is analyzed by studying the principal narrative categories, to wit: time (order; the forms of narrative discourse and their most important characteristics: description, scene and summary; the main frequency traits), voice (the multiple voices of the autobiographic narrator: narrator-author, narrator-character, narrator-novelistic world; as well as the voices of the principal characters), and character. The essay presents a theoretical framework appropriate for the analysis of the galdosian novelistic discourse in order to study such categories. The main paradigms created by the novel are inferred from textual analysis. A reading of the novel is proposed to corroborate the thesis that the mimetic effort and the paradigms resulting from the connotative meanings created by the text express specific and highly idiosyncratic views which can be generalized to those that prevail in the other Novelas contemporaneas, regarding a society that is clearly situated in time and space.
