Abstract
A revision of the moss genus Lepidopilum recognizes 30 species from the previously accepted 145 species. Lepidopilum is a mostly epiphytic genus in the family Callicostaceae with 28 species in the neotropics and two species in the paleotropics. Three informal phenetic groups are tentatively recognized based on gametophytic features. The Scabristeum Group contains 12 species: L. affine, L. apophysatum, L. brevipes, L. chloroneuron, L. cuspidans, L. grevilleanum, L. lastii, L. muelleri, L. pallidonitens, L. scabrisetum, L. subsubulatum and L. verrucipes. The second, Longifolium Group, contains 8 species: L. amplirete, L. aurifolium, L. brevifolium, L. caviusculum, L. frondosum, L. erectiusculum L. integrifolium and L. longifolium. The last, Polytrichoides Group, contains 10 species: L. arcuatum, L. cubense, L. curvifolium, L. diaphanum, L. inflexum, L. permarginatum, L. polytrichoides, L. stillicidiorum, L. surinamense and L. tortifolium. Several taxa of Lepidopilum are of questionable status and are discussed. Approximately nine types were not available for study.
